We posted this video from the 2009 Brooklyn Book Festival on our See/Hear page, but it was also a Year of Musical Fiction event, so we’ll put it here, too. Watch publisher /author Robert Dunn on a panel in the Brooklyn Court House with Amy Sohn and Laura Albert (JT Leroy), moderated by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez.

Cutting Time Contest: Complete Rules
July 1st, 2009You’ve seen our video introduction, now here are the rules:
Make a video of you playing your best blues riff, under one minute, and post it as a video response to our publisher playing his riff here.
In the spirit of the novel Cutting Time, judging will be less on technical skill or ferocity and more on feel—depth of soul and the way the notes fall together in, as the book has it, “a golden mesh of notes.” It’s not how many notes you play, it’s how well. (We’re sure you can whip our publisher!)
So try your hand. Your video should let us see and hear you playing. Any riff, any string of notes … as long as the feel’s there. We’ll allow up to two submissions.
And the prize? Besides bragging rights on our Coral Press site, we’ll throw in two sets of your favorite guitar strings (we like DRs) and a personally autographed copy of Cutting Time, with a tipped-in sheet of the first paragraph handwritten by author Robert Dunn, making your copy of Cutting Time truly one of a kind.
The deadline for the contest is November 16, 2009—the birthday of the great blues guitarist Heddy Days.
Coral Press at BEA 2009
June 5th, 2009We kicked off the Year of Musical Fiction at the huge Book Expo 2009 in New York City, beginning with a benedictive visit with the King and ending with a signing of Robert Dunn’s novel Pink Cadillac—in which Elvis Presley makes an appearance.

Other high points:
Our VP of Marketing, Lawrence Soehnel, picked up 74 books and only minor shoulder injuries from carrying them all.

Before getting his 74 books.
Bob Dunn found out that James Ellroy has a new novel coming out (finally!) this fall, but was too distracted to get a free copy. He did stumble upon Peter Yarrow singing Puff the Magic Dragon.

Bob also met his Cousin Brucie, who signed a CD to Cousin Bob. Turns out Cousin Brucie knows about Pink Cadillac.

A great time was had by all, including Elle Vee, and this charming lady:

BEA Is Here!

One More Welcome – This Time in Video
May 28th, 2009By the way, the suit I’m wearing was bought at H Johns Clothiers in Oakland, Calif. This is where John Lee Hooker bought all his suits. I couldn’t resist.
